The UCD Fencing Club is one the oldest sport clubs at UCD. Founded in 1954, UCD Fencing was apparently one of only five established sport clubs at the time, joining gaelic games, soccer, rugby and athletics. The first club president was Rev. Fr. O’Doherty who, together with former Olympic fencer Patrick Duffy, coached the fledgling club to become contenders in the Irish fencing world. In the early years the college competed well for such a new club, but the more established clubs of Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland usually shared the honours between them.
Over the last half a century, fencing has grown in popularity across Ireland, while UCD Fencing has become a force at the highest levels of the sport. In all, UCD has notched 20 Intervarsity championships, along with a number of team and individual competition victories.
